Payment must be made by VISA or MasterCard credit card and there will be an additional convenience fee of $1.95. An acknowledgement of receipt of application will be sent to all internet applicants via e-mail. Do not send cash. Please indicate the examination title and the last four digits of your social security number on the face of your check or money order. A separate application and processing fee are required for each examination (identified by examination number) for which you are applying. The application processing fee may be waived for Suffolk County residents who are veterans, auxiliary police, volunteer firefighters, volunteer EMTs and volunteer CERT members. All claims for application fee waiver are subject to verification. DUTIES An employee in this class performs a variety of difficult and responsible clerical and typing functions. The principal emphasis of this position is upon the wide variety of clerical tasks performed, which require the application of independent judgment and clerical knowledge. The work of these positions, apart from typewriting, is similar in nature and level to that found in the Senior Clerk class. The nature of the work is such that the incumbent may be required to operate a variety of office equipment including a word processor.
Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees assisting in routine details. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a supervisor through observation of results, periodic audits of work performed and by advice and assistance on unusual problems. Does related work as required. SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION The examination for this title will consist of two parts: I. The written test will cover knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as: 1. English usage; 2.
Proofreading; 3. Clerical operations; 4. Understanding and interpreting written material; 5. Office record keeping, including charts and numbers. Typing test: Straight copy typing test rated at 30 words per minute with 96% accuracy. Candidates who pass the written test and who do not qualify for a waiver. of the typing performance test will be scheduled for the qualifying typing performance test, to be administered during the work week (Monday – Friday), during the months of May/June 2018.

The final rank order of the eligible list will be determined solely on the basis of the scores received on the written test plus veterans’ credits where applicable. Devices with typewriter keyboards, spell-checkers, personal digital assistant, address books, language translators, dictionaries and any similar devices are prohibited. In accordance with Section 52 of the Civil Service Law, for county service, first consideration in appointment will be given to employees in the department where a vacancy occurs, after which appointments will be made from the general eligible list. Eligible lists resulting from promotional examinations are only certified to the jurisdiction in which a candidate is employed.
When the examination is prepared and rated by the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service, the provisions of the Suffolk County Civil Service Rules dealing with the rating of examination will apply. When the written examination is prepared and rated by the New York State Department of Civil Service in accordance with Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law, the provisions of the New York State Civil Service Rules and Regulations which deal with the rating of examination will apply.
The eligible list established as a result of this examination will remain in force for at least one year and may be extended by the Civil Service Department for a maximum of four years. Changing conditions may make it necessary to certify to future vacancies at higher or lower salaries than those announced. Information regarding eligibility for veterans’ credits appears on the promotional application form. For each six months of continuous permanent competitive service within the jurisdiction, to a maximum of 20 years,.10 credits for seniority will be added to the scores of passing candidates only.
Candidates must be medically, physically and psychologically capable of performing the duties of the job. Candidates who are appointed to positions in the Suffolk County service may be required to pass qualifying medical and/or physical and/or psychological evaluations. Saturday Sabbath Observers and handicapped persons: If special arrangements for testing are required, indicate this on your application. No smoking is permitted in the building or on the grounds of the examination site.

Senior Clerk Exam Study Guide
If you are interested in the position(s) listed above and take the Broad Based Clerical/Secretarial Examination, the first step is to submit an application for the Broad Clerical/Secretarial Examination. If you successfully complete and pass the written examination, a link will be sent to you to complete an application for a specific job when a vacancy occurs. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be invited to the performance examination. If you are successful in passing the performance examination, you will then be invited to the oral examination (interview). If you pass the oral examination, you will be placed and ranked onto the job's eligibility list.
If you are within the top three (3) ranks on the eligibility list, you will be interviewed for the first available position vacancy. The pass points and weighting of each of each sub-test will vary in relation to the type of job.
That is, the tests are NOT equally weighted for all jobs, and their relative weights depend upon how much the test applies to the specific job. For example, the arithmetic computations subtest may have a zero weight for a job that does not involve working with numbers; whereas, the MS Word subtest may have a large weight for a job involving preparing documents. Your total score may differ for each job classification to which you apply because different tests scores will be combined differently for each job. EXAMINATION POLICY. To compete for multiple job classifications, a separate application is required. The applications for each job title will be screened for minimum qualifications, and then the relevant broad-based test scores will be applied for the job-specific examination. Candidates who are successful in job-specific examinations will be placed on an eligibility list and will remain eligible for job offers for a duration of 1 year from the date eligibility was determined. Candidates' broad-based written test scores are valid for a maximum of 2 years, during which time the scores can be applied to applicable classifications during the 2 year period. If the broad based tests change through our continuous improvement efforts, test scores may be invalidated sooner than 2 years. If tests change, Personnel Commission will notify candidates about their status of their scores.
Candidates can retake the broad-based tests only after a period of 6 months. If a candidate would like to retake the broad-based tests, the candidate must retake all of the sections of the written or performance examination. Candidates cannot pick and choose the test sections they would like to retake. Candidates' most recent broad based test scores will be identified as their active scores and will supersede all previous scores.

Candidates' retake scores will not update scores or ranks of candidates who are already on an eligibility list, unless the examination for the classification is 'continuous.' . Each classification will also consist of an oral examination which may not be transferred to another classification. SELECTION PROCESS. Interested and qualified candidates can be contacted for temporary clerical assignments as a result of this examination. Selection and promotion are based on a competitive examination process. Candidates who pass all exam parts for a particular classification are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list. Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5).
In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272). Veterans' Credit may be awarded for entry jobs.
